For the Record

I am disheartened by Andrew Baron's decision to spread misinformation. He knows I cannot move to LA without a job...but insists on spinning things this way to shore up his assertion that I am "walking away" from Rocketboom. I did not walk away. I did not accept Andrew's idea of "partnership". I'll explain more a little further down.

It's not true. I'm presently living with my parents in Connecticut until I can get back on my feet.

Below you will find a letter written by Andrew on Sunday, June 25, two days after he pulled the plug on Rocketboom. My responses, which were sent to Andrew on the same day, are in red.

Andrew responded the next day by saying he would not respond to this letter. This then was followed by days of back and forth negotiations, ending yesterday, on Independence Day, with Andrew telling Chuck Olsen, our mediator, that he was taking control of the show and my option was to be the
"face" of rocketboom with no involvement beyond that
(I might in the future be allow to "produce shows", but not for the time being). Very old media. Considering I have personally written, produced, and hosted Rocketboom and was already a producer on Jet Set, this was totally unacceptable. I don't know any "partnership" that functions like that.

I had hoped to keep things civil, and thought my video message to the Rocketboom viewers was very neutral. I felt the need to communicate with the RB audience, without getting into the nitty-gritty of "he said, she said". Dirty laundry is not attractive. That said, ALL the facts, at this point, based on Andrew's actions, need to be presented.

Dear Amanda, this is my last attempt to reach out and let you know I really wish you would stay.

Andrew, you fired me.

After everything that has built up over the last several months (and longer apparently) and with everything I have learned about your disinterest in my various levels of critical input, I can understand why you would need to leave and I as I have always said, I will never hold you back.

I'm sorry you feel that way. I've repeatedly expressed my respect for your many gifts. Especially:

1. You are an exceptional executive producer. Your instincts for what will work or not, and your general vision for the creation of content and distribution for videoblogs is, I believe, unparalleled.

2. You are an exceptional speaker. Whether at conferences, in business meetings or during consulting, you excel at describing the power of Rocketboom and the medium.

3. You are an ingenious curator. Your extraction of outstanding content from all resources is, again, unparalleled.

4. You are a superb navigator of the blogosphere. Additionally, I have always entrusted you with the final decisions of the physical design of Rocketboom.

In fact, it saddens me that you have not had the time and/or willingness to significantly participate creatively in Rocketboom for some months now. We've sent you things during the production process, and what we've received back is criticism after the show has already been produced or after it is too late to make changes. Statements like "I'll continue to check my blackberry but please dont wait on me if it starts to slow you down" and "I will have my phone so I can still chime in but dont feel ever wait on me for any answers if I cant respond in time" really don't cut it.

As you know, when I gave you the 49% of Rocketboom I told you that I hoped it would work out and that the reason why I gave you that percentage was so that you would become involved enough to stay with the company.

I have always been and still am intensely involved in Rocketboom.

Since I told you so many times that I would never want to hold you back from moving on to L.A. to pursue your own thing - since you always said this was really your passion well before I met you -we agreed that you would not take the 49% if you were to move away to L.A. on your own.

That is completely incorrect. There was no agreement about forfeiture of the 49%. We together have had a detailed plan for some time in preparation for the move to LA. And please note I was moving to LA on Rocketboom business, not only to "do my own thing". You did say you would never hold me back, and you also made it clear that doing Rocketboom would not be mutually exclusive of pursuing other passions. Our plan was as follows:

5/05 Amanda told Andrew she was serious about moving to LA by 10/05. Andrew agreed and said that was completely reasonable, since current technology allows Rocketboom to be produced from anywhere.

10/05 Amanda and Mario stored their possessions, gave up their apartment and took a sublet in preparation for the move. Andrew was fully aware.

10/05-4/06 Amanda and Mario continued to sublet. The move was repeatedly delayed, long beyond the original "completely reasonable" time frame. Finally, with Andrew's consent, Rocketboom moved forward to actual transition.

4/06 A plan was implemented for Andrew and Mario to co-direct shoots, gradually transitioning Mario to be interim director. A new professional director was to be hired in LA. What actually happened was that Andrew attended shoots infrequently and by 5/06 had stopped attending altogether.

5/21/06 At this time, the term of Amanda and Mario's sublet was up. Andrew had not attended shoots for nearly a month, and there would be no Rocketboom paycheck for June. Nevertheless, production continued by Amanda and Mario at Amanda's parents' home in Connecticut.

6/16/06 Andrew, Mario and Amanda agreed upon a departure date for LA within the next couple of weeks. Within the next few days, June 30th was chosen. Andrew's assistant had a list of possible editors in LA (which was never delivered to Amanda despite numerous requests). Zadi and Steve were excited to have Amanda nearby to better co-produce Rocketboom's project, The Jet Set Show.

6/23/06 Mario received a call from Andrew in essence saying that Mario and Amanda must either move back to New York or Rocketboom was over.

Since you have claimed that you are moving next week, and because you have never suggested a plan for how this move can integrate into Rocketboom, and because you have already said your goodbye, I get the message and will now move on myself the best I can.

Andrew, see our long term and extensive plan described above.

And, as it turns out, I cannot move to LA because our plan was for me to be engaged in, and compensated for, work on Rocketboom there. Since you will no longer allow that, I have no source of income and therefore cannot move.

With regards to tomorrow's show and the future of Rocketboom, I am not sure what I will do, but you will be honored and respected and encouraged. My plan is to simply say that you are moving on to L.A. to take on the world, that this was always your dream and that you are a obviously a brilliant personality who will no doubt take it by storm.

Please do not speak for me. We've had a long standing agreement in good faith about me continuing Rocketboom from LA, which you have now reneged upon.

Should anyone react and consider the move to be a shame, I will always defend you for following your own dreams and aspirations and staying true to your own interests with acting and now producing.

Again, please do not speak for me. My dreams and aspirations included Rocketboom.

You have wanted to move to L.A. since before I met you, so I am sorry that we could not manage getting there sooner together with Rocketboom still working.

As we've both acknowledged, Rocketboom could not only work but grow stronger by having a presence on both coasts.

With all my love and support for you as a friend, I will never stop caring about you and will always look forward to seeing you bloom.

Andrew, I've said repeatedly that I think you are a genius. Still, there have been problems. Recently, you have treated me as an employee rather than a partner. That may explain your feelings about the 49%.

Business and production can and should be done from both coasts, as we have both acknowledged. To dictate where I live is unnecessary and outrageous and has resulted in the present situation.

And Andrew, our agreement stands. I do own 49% of Rocketboom.

With respect to our show, I suggest we delve into the archives and do a "best of" week. This will allow us some time to work things through.

We had an agreement, Andrew. You should honor it.

Please let me know your thoughts.

You know you're pretty much employable anywhere, right? Rocketboom may go on, but the face and voice of Rocketboom is you - and that's a brand that you take wherever you go. Shit, I'd hire you in a second to do... umm, I don't know, stuff, at the Student Loan Network just to take advantage of your personal power.

Seriously, if you ever find yourself up near Boston, drop me a line. The Financial Aid Podcast has been dabbling for a while in video. The possibility for something bigger is there.

Don't be surprised if you get a crapload of other offers, too.

I know writing this, and at this point making it public, was not easy for you. Know that despite the difficult people, there are thousands who have not and will not speak here, that support you and will have you in their thoughts.

Sad. Tearfully sad to read, because the problem is obvious to me as I read this.

To look back, Andrew recruited you via his Craiglist post, but obviously -- even by his most current words expressed here -- failed to consider how your role would evolve.

When I started "SBS Personalities" I had (and have) this simple rule: "My job is to make you a star." Think about that for 30 seconds. It means that if I place you in a role to present an image, it's not only my job to promote you in that role, but to make sure your needs and desires are catered to.

I took on that idea because I knew four-square that such a relationship materializes anyway once the person in the "image" role becomes a hit.

Andrew forgot -- indeed, didn't know -- that he was placing you in this position. Moreover, and I think this is where he felt he was losing control as your popularity grew. "Rocketboom" became not so much your story, but you, your brother, and your boyfriend as a vehicle and Andrew probably believed your relationship with him was deteriorating to the point where the show was no longer fun for him.

In other words, Andrew may have felt -- I don't know him -- that he was becoming an "appendage" with every moment and with every "ally" you brought into the picture: brother, boyfriend, etc. I can see his point of view, but my approach would have been to really make sure we've got a detailed corporate structure in place, where you're a coporation with stock.

Because under that umbrella you can distribute stock to brother, boyfriend, etc, and Andrew can still have his 51 percent. But it would cause you to figure out how much stock you -- and Andrew -- were willing to give up to the others. Or just pay them, where they become employees.

Having written this, your relationship can be repaired, if you like. If you like. If you like (again) But what you have to return to is what you like about doing Rocketboom, and each other. Then really hash out the matter of who does what and the real big issue -- starting a company.

Funny. At Vloggercon I told Andrew this is what he needed to do.

I think the two of your are stronger as a team rather than separate. Amanda's you've clearly established a name for yourself and will go far. Andrew's new version of Rocketboom will not be the success it was because it lacks you.

Plus, there's the other problem: how do you, Andrew, regain the confidence and support of sponsors like Earthlink? This spat is public. Everyone of note is seeing it. It will impact the value of your sponsorships, and not in a good way.

In closing, I wish you God's speed. I believe Amanda that you have a singular talent and wit, and business savvy. I certainly see that, and I think all you wanted was to be seen as the great business woman that you are.

That's nothing to be ashamed of.

Amanda, I second what everyone else is saying - that you were really Rocketboom's hook, face and personality. I wouldn't say that RB couldn't survive without you, but it will certainly be different and would likely have to develop a whole new group of viewers to get back to where it was.

You are powerful in this world. I suspect you don't fully appreciate this because of the current situation. I have every confidence that you will land on your feet and that you have learned a lot from being part of RB and will benefit from many aspects of this experience.

In the meantime, I hope you can make it to LA. I have some friends out there at CLC Films. They do more offbeat stuff but I am sure they would love to work with you if they have any projects going. In fact, I think they do have something in the works, if I remember right.

Good luck and keep in touch. This whole thing stinks. But the nice part about stink is that it washes off.

Amanda, there is no Rocketboom without you. I appreciate your transparency, as I'm sure many do, but regardless of what happened, this is still the case.

I don't envy whomever Andrew tries to sub in for your role, since I believe they're going to be met with a backlash the likes of which the Blogosphere has never seen.

If it comes down to a legal issue over who gets the 49%, I'm sure there are more than enough lawyers who are long-time viewers of yours that would be more than eager to help you out.

I was let go at a job almost a year ago. We were having problems and I decided it was time to leave. She was short on coaches for her cheerleading gym and wasn't looking for anyone else so I felt obligated to stay at least part-time to help her out. I worked one night a week and was scheduled to leave two months later. After a few weeks,it seemed that the boss and I were getting along and so, I wanted to stay but She let me go because

*She didn't like my entrepreneurial website:

    *I asked for a raise

*She thought I was planning to steal her clients via the website, email communication, and phone.

I felt really bad about it. I liked her from the very beginning. It was just a lot of miscommunication.

Also, she discovered an email to parents of her cheer gym some personal /private information exchanged between me and her (I told her to ask a few parents to send her copies of emails I exchanged with them to prove that I wasn't stealing any of her business). I didn't think it was anything bad.

It was similar to what you shared with us on your post. Actually, yours was a lot more detailed.

I still feel bad about it. I wish I can work it out with her.

I hope it works out better for you.

A classic case is the legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden ("The Wizard of Westwood", multiple NCAA championships). He wanted the Univ of Minnesota job, but the UCLA offer came 1st..the rest as they say, is History.

So, LIfe is giant meandering path.."branching tree" of decision-paths. Take the Rocketboom experience..learn from it, & move on. I guarantee you your visibility with RB is almost surely a foot-in-the-door for another opportunity. I get the impression you were being squeezed out of any partnership activity (your Northwestern degree implies you have brains & are capable of other skills other than a pretty face/body), so next time get your requirements in WRITING (a contract).

Q: How did you get rich?
A: By making a lot of mistakes

If the 49% is in writing, it seems you have a pretty big stake on whether the brand continues or not.

Essentially his two per cent edge is meaningless since if gives up any of his stake it makes him vulnerable to you aligning with them.

I obviously haven't read the agreement, but it has the potential to be very messy. Don't get screwed over without getting paid.

The cleanest solution would be for all joint properties to cease and for all parties to start new entities/brands.

Amanda, it is to your credit that I (and I assume many others) could not tell by watching RB that all this was going on behind the scenes. Its sad when both a friendship and partnership sour. RB will probably continue on but I don't know if I will watch it, to me (as many have commented) YOU were Rocketboom and you were more than just the "face" of it. Without you it'll be like the Tonight Show going from Carson to Leno - maybe its the same name and format but its lost its heart.

If I hadn't stumbled on a link one day that led me to a snarky sarcastic blonde doing something that resemebled cable access on crack, I would never have made RB one of my daily fixes (and BTY, I am one of those conservative viewers you told John Edwards you were trying to "alienate" - obviously it didn't work). RB may be a commercial brand name among podcasts now but I think Drew will find that YOU were the big draw among those of us who watched.

Needless I doubt you will go unemployed for long (at least I hope not). You've got a built in fanbase of thousands. Just let us know how you're doing...and good luck.

This whole episode sounds like RocketBoom might be ripe for the first behind-the-scenes weblog-based reality TV show!

Episode 1 starts now with this bitter and public fight.. rife with deception lies and reneged promises.

Hire two videographers to chronicle this fight from both sides! We clearly have both the pro and antagonist! Edit it all together in Final Cut and post a new episode every Saturday. Continue to produce the daily RocketBoom posts as usual.

You'll be right up there with Lost and 24!! Sell advertising on the new show, and open RocketBoom SoCal.

What I will address is the contract. Any liquidity provisions hiding in there? If there are no restrictions on your equity and what you do with it, there are a lot of ways to cause... well, karma, for lack of a better phrase, to come back around. :)

And even if you're not interested in the karma angle, it's pretty clear the property is worth vastly less without you than with you. So find a starry-eyed investor to buy your share and put this behind you with some greenbacks in your pocket.

    Please don't hate me, but...

I understand the feeling to asplode the dirty laundry, but even though I'm a tremendous fan, I gotta say that the fight that's staring here is not professional.

This is why you have a mediator. Keep this away from the fans. RB will go on for a while with in interem host, fans will probably send in material to cover for you, and the show has to go on regardless of the current situation.

Amanda, to be blunt, quit acting like a dumped teenager. Stop telling the world Andrew is lying, even if he's making it all up, and take the high road. Figure this out privately, work out some type of PR arrangement, make a quick joke about it, and move on.. it worked for Norm McDonald and SNL!

PS. Please don't work exclusively on Television. I think everyone here loves you on the Internet.

  • At 1:56 AM, Blogger Carlos said…

Amanda, we love watching you and I wish you the best on the your subsequent work which I am sure I will subscribe to and actively support. Andrew Baron acted completely unprofessionally in this situation and I hope that the pressure that "digg" and other "new media" will create will change things, or at least make for a better outcome for you personally.

    Good luck!

I was not aware of Rocketboom before seeing the post on digg about you being "Unboomed", I decided to have a look through the archives.

The latest 'Booms' in the archive(without Amanda) don't compare to the earlier ones.

As far as I can see you WERE Rocketboom, I think Andrew has dug Rocketboom's grave with this decision.

I don't think Amanda is 'starting a fight here!'.

Amanda has a right to keep her fans informed, and that's all she's done.

Having had a business excursion go south myself, I too was victim of not heeding the old adage of 'every partnership eventually turns into a sinking ship'.

    Truer words were never spoken.

Keep fighting for that 49%. That Andrew thinks he can dangle that like a carrot whenever he wants is remarkable.

In any case, know your legion of fans will be waiting to see where you pop up next.

Poor Andrew. Can't seem to grasp his Rocket isn't going to go Boom again anytime soon, unless he comes to his senses.

  • At 3:49 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Amanda, just reading your wikipedia bio tells us how beloved you are on and off the blogosphere, and how many people have noticed you in possitions you may one day reach! Andrew seemed to not even acknowledge your comments in the he said/she said. And don't listen to Matt, you have every right to post what you want, especially since this affected you the way it did. Good luck in the future, you'll be fine! Go for whatever you want, in any media, and your fans will still be your fans. The best "revenge" is a good life and success.

With all do respect, when is the last time Norm McDonald had a real gig? I love Norm. I think he's funny. He's also unemployeed paying the rent doing a few nights here and there at the local improv.

Amanda is not a Norm McDonald. She is much better in terms of her talent and career field.

I have been involved in these type of disputes twice in my career. They never end well. You might actually be surprised at the results this post may yield. It never hurts to put facts in writing while they are fresh on your mind. Nothing of public record has EVER been dismissed by a judge... this would explain Andrews "legally coached advice" (IMHO) to not respond to this from Amanda.

Be sure to check all the user comments on the TWIT appearance regarding Andrew as well (Amanda and everyone else). It was clear to many that he gets "personally injured" when someone disagrees with his point of view- as well as being slightly annoying in general.

    Good Luck Amanda.

There is no doubt that you, Drew, Mario and eveyone else who helped make Rocketboom what it is caught lightening in a bottle. It is more than most of us ever even come close to. I salute you and take my hat off to all of you for how much joy, laughter, information, and education you brought to me everyday for a long time.

He's jealous and he wants control of you and the show.

Don't let him screw you out of what you've worked so hard for. You're the one people watch the show for, not whathisface. 49% is an insult, especially when you see how he abuses the 2% he has on you. I don't know all the details, but I know that you're getting the raw end of this deal.

In courts of law its not what you know, its about what you can prove that make the difference between winning and losing in litigation. It looks like legally 49% of RocketBoom is still yours... meaning that Andrew can't proceed alone.

I'd negotiate a new deal independent of Andrew for your future and get a a lawyer to negotiate a buy-out of your 49% from Andrew. That might take a significant amount of time but a lawyer would do it for a percentage of the fee.

Andrew can't just put a new face in front of the camera and call it RocketBoom without paying you for your percentage of that evolving business. Someone cannot fire a partner... they can negotiate the dissolution of the business and split the assets.

The videos on the archives are 49% yours... a cease and desist order for using those videos to sustain the brand without negotiating some kind of agreement is in order. That would likely motivate Andrew to deal with you in good faith as a partner in a business that needs restructuring and not as a "wage slave" that refused to follow orders.

Andrew can re-start a new buiness and drop the RocketBoom brand of course but he's in a terrible situation. You are NOT without options legally.

It would be wise to solicite a lawyer for the RocketBoom dissolution and consider another lawyer to negotiate a new deal with another interested party like AOL as an example.

I would continue to put out a video product and cut all references to RocketBoom and build a new brand around yourself... "Amanda Congdon... Just for the Record".

I know you're an artist and these ideas sound confrontational and like ugly business but what's happening to you IS ugly. It appears you made every effort to negotiate for yourself in good faith. Now just get a lawyer to work queitly for you to
protect the assets you created and that Andrew has 51% of... he'll deal and buy you out to salvage some of the assets. He might even come to the table and discuss in good faith letting you proceed from the West Coast.

Lawyers are a major component of the world of media and you are headed towards a bright future in media.

Hells yes, Amanda! Some folks here have started formulating a great plan, I think. Incorporate your own company - it only takes a few days in many states. Retain a 51% share for yourself, then either start taking the offered donations, or offer to sell the remaining 49% to your viewers. Once the ball is rolling, you have two good options.

    1) Use this cash to make an offer to purchase RB, lock, stock, and barrel, from Andrew (or really, just buy another 3 or 4 percent, I guess). It would be a good move for him, as RB will surely hit rough times without you, and a great move for you, as you could retain the domain, format, correspondents, and your audience without working hard to move folks over and get the word out.

    2) Start a new vlog. You've been at it long enough to assemble your own team and run the show. The offers from folks for employment are great, and may get you where you wanna go, but this way you can retain control. I'd buy into your venture, for sure.

Seems to me that your tensions surrounded your plans to move to California. People say one thing but they don't always mean it - he diden't and when you tried to move - he threatened you and you went ahead then he fired you.

I guess there's feeling between you - working relationship feels that have not been resolved - and times like this it's hard to see how it could be resolved.

But I would think - you could just pickup from RocketBoom and make your own show and 75% of the viewers would follow you and dump RocketBoom.

Hi Amanda, I am Juan Luis Casañas, one of the winners of the Intel- Mexico videoblog contest.
I remember talking to you guys about the subject of you moving to L.A and I also remember Andrew being totally OK whit it, he even made it sound like it was good for the show. I don’t understand his change.
I know if you want to, you can do whatever you want, sometimes you might need to risk some things and sometimes you might fall, but the only solution is to get up and start again.
    I wish you the best.

In my experience I have seen many, many thoughtful and dedicated people labor successfully in their work only to be fired or otherwise unjustly ostricized. When one wins an award, the social reinforcement is enormous, and being fired is the opposite. The truth is that neither are based on merit, only power. And while one may always reason that it might've been better to avoid having been fired, the irony is that having never been fired is nothing but a badge of timidity. Think how brave you are.

There were exactly 5 people working on the Rocketboom show. Since the production team was so small, everyone did several jobs.

Andrew Baron (founder, producer, business, used to write as well, but not recently)

Amanda Congdon (producer, talent, writer, business)

Mario Librandi (producer, director, writer, camera)

    Sherng-Lee Huang (editor, talent, camera)

    Andrew Congdon (writer, PA, talent).

Andrew Baron and Amanda Congdon have never been romantically involved.

Sorry to see Rocketboom end, but I gotta agree with Matt. No need to air this in public. You're already a "personality" and any serious potential employers/partners will keep this episode in the back of their mind. Better to work this stuff out in the background, regardless of what the other party does. Remember, never wrestle with a pig.

You and only you were the reason we as a group watched. When the show didn't include your fun loving wit and delivery it was not as good or lacking. If Andrew is smart and sane he'll ask you to stay and give you the other 2% to propel Rocketboom to new heights. If he doesn't please consider starting your own VLOG (ie. AMANDAZOOM.COM is available and would be as big a hit and even have many advertisers begging to jump on your Band Wagon. ) Don't let this get you down, your the reason many of us care! I understand that legally, Mr. Baron may want to keep his responses away from answering the questions, comments and statements presented by Ms. Congdon ; but does this seem crazy to anyone else but me ??!!??

This reminds me of those non sequitur conversations that happen between folks about to have a nervous breakdown and others that still have a solid grip on their minds. Or conversations with co-workers that _know_ they are about to be busted for lying on a resume/report. Or the way that the current Administration answers questons about Iraq, the defecit, education reform, healthcare reform, reasons for picking up the flag burning debate and wanting to offer people $200 to buy expensive gas . . .but I digress.

What the hell was he thinking? Blogs are great; A writer worth her/his salt can get by; audio podcasts are slightly harder because you have to sound like you know the subject of which you speak thoroughly and can carry a discussion (with a good voice). But v-blogs?

Dude (Mr. Baron) - it is all about the prescence; not just the look (putting a substitute pretty face on the show) but the killer combination of wit, charm, intelligence and plain old understanding what the audience is looking for.

Folks, let's make sure that we don't forget this by simply switching our loyalty to the next "anchor" that Rocketboom *hires* (because you are right Amanda, that was certainly not a partnership) . . .unless it is Amanda!

Good luck and best wishes; keep the faithful posted on where you land. More Unboomed please . . .

Amanda - based on what you posted above, sounds like Andrew's done 1% of the work for the last month or so, leaving it 99% up to you and Mario. That's 101% unfair.

Hopefully you'll be fairly compensated for your 49%. (I think you should hold on to it, and make sure you benefit from the business you helped create.)

Amanda, I've enjoyed watching you on Rocketboom (and I've never commented or emailed prior to this). I want you to know that I believe you are an extraordinary talent (...I should know, as I represented electronic broadcast talent, politicians, and luminaries for many years). A few pieces of advice -- 1) Now that you've printed your side of the story, let this matter rest for at least a few days and re-visit later (in a private vice public setting) with Baron). Ideally, the two of you can sit down and resolve this matter without escalating to lawyers and civil complaints. (Almost always, when lawyers get involved at the dissolution of a business relationship, rather than at the creation, no one wins (except for the billing lawyers)). I'm a big believer in alternative dispute resolution, and I'd recommend that you give mediation another try. 2) Whatever raw feelings you have right now (hurt, frustration, etc.) will subside with time, and you will experience greater success (as long as you remain focused/driven and don't rest on prior success)...such is the strength of your talent and rarest of gifts, your charismatic on-air presence; (i.e., the x factor). 3) Every single person I've ever known in entertainment and electronic news has lost a job. The MOST successful were the ones with high EQ who persevered and immediately jumped right back into the saddle. 4) Whether doing business with friends, family, strangers, companies, always consult a good lawyer at the start of your venture (...I'd hire a large-firm lawyer, as they tend to be the most honest/ethical/capable). 5) Lean on your boyfriend and childhood family & friends for therapy and as sounding boards (i.e., the people who can be brutally honest with you and have no hidden agenda or reason to glad-hand you because you're famous). On-air talent often attract fans, agents, producers who will not voice criticism or let bad news travel up ( other words, be wary about letting your own hype destine you to entitled success. Hard work will always be a part of any success equation.) 6) Don't let the last few days taint all the great stuff. Focus on all the positives -- the laughter, the friends, the new skills, apprenticing in this comedic/writing/journalistic/technological craft, the viewers who've been genuinely touched by your work -- so that the past two years become a wholly positive memory that you can reach back to for inspiration.

I wish you all the best, and I expect that the rest of America and the world will soon be entertained by you.

Amanda, you seem like a very likable person but I want to say I really do wonder about so many of these comments saying you were be all and end all of RB. For those people I'm certain this is true but my guess is that wasn't quite the case in the actual production of the show. If you really were all there was to RB why shouldn't you be glad to move on and start your own vlog that it will obviously have a massive following. Not a bad position to be in really. But as to a personal partnership coming to an end, that should have remained private in my view. I don't think viewers were 'owed' the two sides of the story. Still, I wish you well.

    Hi Amanda,

I was annoyed that Yahoo deemed your departure from newsworthy. Since I had no idea what rocketboom was, of course I checked it out. Who is Amanda Congdon?

In short, a pretty chick who stumbled upon the intersection of the internet and reality television at just the right time.

This got me thinking. What is the differnce between a "true" celebrity and somone like Amanda Congdon?

The differnce is not appearance or talent. You've got the looks and you've got the chops.

As far as I can tell, real celebrities have agents that carefully manage their public image. Their personality is carefully packaged for the public's consumption. They become product.

Unfortunately, the intimacy of your internet presence, while it may endear your fans to you, will also undermine any efforts towards profitable stardom.

Live by the sword, die by the sword.

You really are quite pretty. Let me know if you want to hang some time.

Why is it that good fortune brings out the worst in us? We just cannot handle success. I still cannot figure out how the summer of love and Woodstock morphed into disco. How does a country decide after 8 years of universal prosperity, technological advancement and world respect to abandon the direction of the Clinton administration for the Bushwhacked world of deficits, deprivation, deceit and death..and that is just using the lousy thing starting with “d”.

Was it 9-11? Or does success always breed failure? Ken Lay is the archetype, not the exception...a multimillionaire who needed to be a multibillionaire. Now he is dead and most think he is better off.

The CEO syndrome seems to be that too much is never enough, especially if the other guy has more. So is it the simple matter of human greed and jealousy which is at the core of success turned into failure? I think so. No matter how good ones fortune, it is ruined for many of us if someone else has it better. That is just some fucked up shit.

Every once in a while, something springs anew, like the summer of love. This time it was the internet ...not as much fun as free love, but pretty damn free. And while some made a lot of money in the early days, there was no resentment. Everyone can dig freedom.

And what do we have now? Government spying, big business buying and today I read Amanda Congdon has been ushered out of her Rocketboom post for what looks to me like a case of self-defeating jealousy by her faceless producer partner. It is no disgrace to be a good producer who sucks on camera..or so I have learned to tell myself.

The point is the most successful vlog is on its way to failure. And the internet...dust off your boogie shoes.

    Hi Amanda,
I just found you due to my friend David Pogue.
You'll be good. You're heartbreakingly cute. The only thing that could stand in the way of big time fame would be that you also clearly has humor and lots of brains. Some heavy psychopharmaca should cure that.

Amanda, did you see the vid on YouTube of Andrew Baron talking at CaseCamp about Rocketboom and you said/he said? Andrew Baron's side of the story

No matter what another poster alleges, you are a celebrity. His narrow definition and perception that "real celebrities have agents that carefully manage their public image. Their personality is carefully packaged for the public's consumption. They become product.", not only does not reflect reality it is a complete logical disconnect.

If every " real celebrity" in this poster's world had an agent (or even a manager); then half of these so-called agents should be fired, given the media's propensity to gain access to celebrity's immoral and unprofessional behaviour.

You will land on your feet and be ultimately successful in your next endeavour and your experience on rocketboom should help you as a personal growth process...

OK, so it's a fact that Amanda is the face of Rocketboom. And she was a co-writer, co-producer as well. But to cut to the chase, it seems as though she and her team were spearheading the entire creative process! So why should she go and work for someone else? I'm sure that she could get backers and start her own show. It has a low start up cost, and if she can stay with her parents long enough that should help with expenses. (I know that sucks, but if its gonna put you on your feet AND in charge of your own destiny, it's a small price to pay.)
Why create revenue that you get a piece of when you could create a work that is yours and you reap the majority benifits as well. Heck, I dont have a lot of money, but I'd invest $500-$1000 in you! And I'm just a viewer! Create a show and sell 30% of it to someone else as a way to cover startup costs.
Anyway, thats my thoughts, Your milage may vary.

I totally can relate to the situation you are going through. I have started and launch an online business, and my partner shafted me, spreading false rumors. The difference is that you can market yourself and your audience is larger.
You are indeed the face of RB and you will bounce back to achieve greater things.
    Best of Luck

    Hi, Amanda.

First off, I do recall your mentioning moving to L.A. when we met at CES in February. As long as we're on the record.

I don't know about the legal stuff, but RB is not you, and you are not RB. It's something you do, not something you are. Holding on to that idea may not salve any of the pain or quench the bloodlust (I can only imagine). It may permit other options.

You knew you'd step down as frontman for the show at some point, and you'd have handled a transition smoothly and with great charm. Again, I don't know about the legal stuff, but I'd presume that you want your 49% to be worth something a year or two from now, or even right now. What can you do to assure RB's continued growth and profits post-AC? Wishing you a great forensic accountant...

Last, I've been waiting to share the Cole Porter's "Farewell, Amanda" lyrics from the Adam's Rib movie.

    Farewell, Amanda.
    Adios, adee or adieu.
    Farewell, Amanda.
    It all was great fun,
    But it's done. It's through.
    Still, now and then,
    Fair Amanda,
When you're stepping on the suns above,
    Please recall that wonderful night
    On the veranda,
    Sweet Amanda,
    And our love.

I'm so pleased you reached out to your loving public. An amazing amount of linklove.

    All the best.

I've removed Rocketboom from my Itunes podcast list. Although content was not always interesting, the method in which it was delivered was refreshing. I guess that is 5 minutes of my day I can spend purusing other things.
Hope to see you hosting somewhere else.

So work them out in private like we all do. Go do something with your life, and stop all of this nonsense at this point. Go save lives!! (like i do)
