Converge South: Final Thoughts
For me, ConvergeSouth was great because I got to meet so many awesome people in a very relaxed atmosphere.
Highlights: meeting Chris Daniel, Dave Slusher, Dave Winer, Ed Cone, and Duncan Black.
My session went alright... Sue Polinsky tells me that there was a great response to it... but I wish I had been better prepared for some folks being completely unfamiliar with videoblogs... I just didn't want to do a videoblogging 101 session, but, in retrospect, maybe the medium is too young NOT to do something like that. I think people will be ready for some deeper conversations about video on the web in a year or so from now.
I was lucky to have Kevin Howarth in my session, who took some great notes.
I have posted the powerpoint slides that accompanied my presentation here.

The University PR department did a bunch of video of everything. I'm getting copies and will check if we can share. If we can, I'll post on each session leader's blog to update their readers (and fans, I'm one!)
My real blog is http://sue.polinsky.com; the blogger thing is just to post in places like this. Amanda, if you want a WordPress blog, LMK and I'll host it for you as a thank-you gift for doing ConvergeSouth!

Amanda (and Nick),
Nevermind audio, shouldn't there be a video of this presentation? ;)
Thanks for the slides, Amanda.

It's always nice to find another Dr. Katz fanatic.
Anyone into Dr. Katz has a pretty decent chance of enjoying another great show that was gone way too soon: Austin Stories...
Brilliant stuff...
P.S. RocketBoom is great, Amanda. Keep it up!

I just checked out your blog and went to that rocketboom site. Very cool, you have great television presence! You've got great energy and capability to make something I wouldn't give a rat's arse about interesting. In the words of my geek friend, kudos.
Feel free to check out my blog.

I'd be curious to find out, I have a site at http://www.game-overdrive.com/review/ that is setup with Blogger.com where I do video reviews of computer games and I give my opinions while I show gameplay. Does this actually qualify as a video blog?

It's kinda late for me now, so I have to make this post short, or my big brother will smack me on the head.
You have a great blog, you're beautiful, and I hope you're having a great break, with lots of fun and chocolate cake!

I think you should expect that people will need a 101 session in videoblogging. It is a new thing, even if a few years old. Always got to start with the basics. A great site that does start with the basics of video blogging is freevlog.org , they are very helpful and give the personal assistance one needs in starting out in video blogging. Not expecting one to make the leap all on their own.

Were there really people there who didn't know what vlogging was?!

CK: Amazingly, yes! I mean, the mainstream is just beginning to catch on, but I would expect at a blogging conference that people would have been more familiar...

Oddly enough, despite a lot of tech savvy bloggers present, I think there is still an overall psychological intimidation people have about creating video. Writing? Easy. Recording audio? Sure - we've all used tape recorders. Video? Hmmm...there's home video (VHS and digital) that many of us are used to, but it's been a traditionally clearer demarcation between amateur video and professional video.
I must say that I've been personally surprised in the last month, both learning from Len Witt (www.pjnet.org), Amanda, and Dave Slusher just how much the tools are advancing - and conferences like ConvergeSouth will help evangelize video blogging and help the rest of us realize that it's possible.
