Fearless Foursome

I've been having such a blast here in San Jose. Here's a pic of Steve, me, Zadi and Melanie taken last night at the pool party.

If you have a sec, check out this article in The Wall Street Journal, "Moguls of New Media".

    Nice mention in the Journal.

But I do agree with Billy Wilkins III in the other comments section.

Not to put any more pressure on you, but I really think you need to start doing something IMMEDIATELY, even if it's only a weekly video like the diner piece.

We are an ADD nation with an attention span and memory of about five minutes. And regardless of what the Coney Island video with Joanne reveals or does not, in any case, we are a society in which the bad guys often prevail in the business community.

Right and wrong simply doesn't chart. Look for Donald Rumsfeld to still be holding down his job long after many of us are taking dirt naps.

Those in power generally operate to rules of their own making. Being on the right side of an issue, well, that and fifty cents won't buy you a cup of java.

Hope to see you back online on a consistent basis, even if only weekly. But, some kind of regular connection to your fan base is very important. Once people conclude you are expendable, that's a very difficult Genie to force back into the bottle.

Here's one household rooting for you.

    Dear Amanda,

Although I miss you on RB, I look foward to seeing your next venture. Your quirky sense of humor definately adds a smile to my day.

Just want to throw in with others who say start broadcasting something as quickly as possible. You are the star and you have the following.

As for the Journal article, I am not entirely sure how accurate that one is. Articles in Wired and Business Week seem to paint a different picture of podcasters and vloggers generating revenue and show that many see no need to try and break into "old media" but see the new as taking over completely!

  • At 5:03 PM, Blogger Amanda said…

Terrence!! Yes, yes, yes. You are absolutely right. I am sitting here listening to the terrific Heather Armstrong ( at BlogHer... but I will dig in later. New media CAN be a be all end all. No one needs to crossover to old media WHATSOEVER if they don't want to. Blogging in all its various forms is becoming more and more sustainable every day.

I don't know how you can have a great time without me there, but it looks like you are anyway. Not that we've ever met or anything.

    Dearest Amanda,

I wanted to post this in the other comment section, but you closed it before I had the chance.

I'm sure I speak for many of my fellow viewers when I say:

We will watch you do pretty much anything. You making tuna on toast would be highly entertaining. (No doubt, it would be the Amanda version of tuna on toast, though!)

As I've said before -- time to move on to bigger and better things...

And hey, won't you return my email at some point? ;-(

  • At 1:19 AM, Blogger Jorge Cocompech said…

i had to read my feeds tonight ('cause i'd a busy day, so..), and i can't comment your last entry (before this, off course.. just like WrongwayStoryteller) . .
I want to tell two things:
No matter what is going on with RocketBoom, the first idea and concept 'bout vlogs (as i knew) will be with you (in my head) . . .
    And in the photo's entry . . You're a goddess of vlogs. ..
married me! (hahaha . little joke) . ...
So, i send you a kisses made of strawberries and jaguar hugs

While many are saying things like - "Amanda, move on." and "You should do new stuff, immediately.", I say take it at your own pace.

If it takes a year or more to see more Amanda, then so be it. Sure I'd love to see you in a daily vlog tomorrow, but more importantly I hope you took whatever time you needed to do whatever it is you want to do.

If you ever consider writing a manuscript about your interesting experience, give me a holler.

You have so many options available now that you're UnBoomed!

Like the last commenter: I wanted to post this in the other comment section, but you closed it before I had the chance.

For the average viewer what matters is in the end is the videos, so my feelings/views about the rocketboom breakup will remain my own. I have now watched both rocketboom and unboomed for some time now, but I can not continue seeing both. My personal conclution is I like my videos the Amanda style and I will continue to watch what you are doing where ever you go.

As a side note, I think the defining moment for me was when they threw out the computer in Rocketboom.

Great article Amanda. It really shows the way the media world is turning!

  • At 1:05 PM, Blogger Steven said…

I will not watch anyone sitting eating toast. Well maybe the once, but for inane crap like that there is big brother. Amanda is entertaining not just because she is cute and has a nice smile. It's because she is funny, quirky and smart that is the real part of her success so far. If this is kept up I have no doubt she will go for.

    p.s. I love cheesecake.

  • At 1:12 PM, Blogger Steven said…

You can't watch the videos on rocketboom and on unboomed or from Amanda wherever she may be? I don't understand, they are only a few minutes long. You don't have that 2 spare?

  • At 1:55 PM, Blogger Martino said…

Awesome as ever ;). Btw it's cool to see you even on WSF :D.

Can't wait see your new work... [hopefully something with Robert Scoble...]

  • At 4:20 PM, Blogger WrongwayStoryteller said…

Geez. You guys take me so literally!

When I said "we would watch Amanda make tuna on toast"-- I meant that, undoubtedly, Amanda's version of tuna on toast would be MUCH more entertaining than watching a reality show... who knows what (who?) it would involve!

In fact, now that we're discussing it, and since people are taking me so literally, Amanda: could you please make your next segment about your making tuna on toast?

Maybe you could be the next Martha Stewart or Rachael Ray, except without the annoying "EVOO" and "delish!" or the nasty "Mommy Dearest"/"Fatal Attraction" vibe.

I'm kidding, of course. Well, only partly. :)

  • At 5:03 PM, Blogger WO7 said…

Amanda...I've been watching on a daily basis for a long time. And curiously enough, I do feel like I know you. Like someone I know from the coffee shop. And also, like watching a reality soap opera only"en viva".
I try to leave a short post everyday because I know it helps rate you higher in the search engines. I don't always put a lot of thought into my posts.
I believe vlogging is the media of the future because it is driven by personal exchange and not crass commercialism.
I think you are a breath of fresh air, thanks.

    Hi Amanda,

I remember reading a comment you'd made recently about not wanting your content on YouTube, I'm guessing because of their new license terms; aka they own it once they have it.

I thought you may be interested in Robert X. Cringely's take on the whole thing, it may even put your mind at ease (if it wasn't at ease).

Hope you had an enjoyable weekend, you look to have judging by the photo.

Yeah...I was the extremely tall girl that came up to you and acted like a TOTAL DORK the other night- uh or one of the extremely tall girls... I was very relaxed about it until I realized that oh my god you are so pretty it just crazy- and then I got all giggly and weird. Damn it.

Anyway what I wanted to say to you and don't know if I did, is that a lot of people support you and hope to see continued success for you in the near future.

    Keep rockin!

Man, I should have been one of the dudes that crashed BlogHer! Were they the cabana boys for the event or something?

Glad you had a fun time out there and I am very much looking forward to whatever project you engage in next.

To me and a lot of others you are the queen of "new media".

    Rock on!

    You're my favorite "mogul."

That's a great piece in WSJ and I look forward to the day when I might stumble into something that gets me positive attention like that.

Best of luck with what you do.

Amanda, Please don't think of being a crossover person as abandoning blogging or vlogging, which both are dear to your heart.
Rather look at it as the opportunity to branch out, give yourself a change of pace, and/or
more importantly a greatway of inviting the UN-blogged to the party.
Also being the guest host for Saturday Night Live would not be so bad now and then. Or going on Letterman and doing a Top Ten List. Guest shots on TV series could be fun. It does not look like you have any permanent damage from your guest role on CSI. Be open to making new friends in all media.
Who knows, you may think up something totally new while cruising through the existing media landscape.
The world needs a good laugh. You have a wonderful gift of wit, humor and just plain outstanding writting skills. Do not hide your light.
